The Market was designed in 1904 as a logical consequence of the intense fishing and commercial activity in the area. Between 1940 and 1980, it became the nerve centre for the distribution of fish to the interior regions, Compostela, A Estrada and A Ulla, carried out by the figure of the "patifas", women who distributed the fish in baskets on their heads.
After an ambitious renovation work carried out in 2016, it has become a space that has been able to combine its architectural value and attractive aesthetics with multiple possibilities for receiving diverse events without forgetting its main function: the market of products from our estuary and our crops.
Next to the market is the Lamprey house, inaugurated in 2017 as a fish market for the Valeiros, the local fishermen who catch this prehistoric fish of high gastronomic value.
Did you know that the lamprey was a delicacy for the Roman emperors, who brought it from this estuary in vessels to be tasted at their banquets?
